[nach dem Botaniker Johann F. Trentepohl, * 1748, ✝ 1806], Gattung der Grünalgen mit etwa 60 zumeist tropischen Arten; der Thallus besteht entweder aus verfilzten Fäden oder bildet scheibenförmige Lager, zum Teil durch in Öltropfen gelöste Karotinoide rot oder gelb gefärbt; der eigenartige Geruch (»Veilchensteine«) entsteht durch ätherische Öle. Trentepohlia aurea bildet in Europa gelb gefärbte Überzüge an Felsen, Trentepohlia umbrina (»Veilchensteinalge«) kommt in feuchtkühlen Schluchten vor. Aufgrund der landangepassten Lebensweise und der von sterilen Zellen umhüllten Sporangien werden die Trentepohlia als Vorläufer der Landpflanzen diskutiert.
